Inglis is a Canadian company that was founded by John Inglis, in 1859. At that time, the company, operating under the name Mair, Inglis, and Evatt, was located in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. In 1881, operating under the name John Inglis and Sons, the company moved facilities to Toronto. In 1937, an American named Major J.E Hahn purchased the company and decided to make significant changes to its day-to-day operations. Prior to WWII, Inglis manufactured commercial products that were not designed for residential use or application. However, after WWII, Inglis began manufacturing consumer products designed for residential use. Initially, products ranging from fishing tackle to domestic heaters and stoves were produced.

In 1946, Inglis began producing laundry machines, dishwashers, and electric and gas dryers for a company that would later become Whirlpool. The success of Inglis quickly grew and the company began expanding and diversifying its product line. By 1970, Inglis was producing almost all of the different types of major appliances available to consumers.

To remain a strong competitor in the 80s and 90s, Inglis made operational changes. Inglis, as it had done in the past, expanded its product line and began building new facilities for the distribution of its products. As a result, Inglis solidified itself as a solid company and mainstay in the major appliances industry. In 2001, Inglis officially changed its name to Whjrlpool. However, the Inglis brand is still widely available to consumers.
